South Africa's Class of 2024 is gearing up for their final academic hurdle: the matric examinations. With just 41 days to go until the first paper, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed the official start date on Monday, 21 October 2024.
DBE Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said:
In fact, the actual preparation begins in January when the schools open because by February, March, that's when we get to register those that are in matric to see how many there are and then school continues.
As the DBE finalizes the number of candidates and prepares scripts and question papers, ensuring the safety and security of exam centers and materials is paramount. Previous incidents of leaks and lost papers have highlighted the need for stringent measures to protect the integrity of the exams.
"There's a lot that goes into it," says the Spokesperson.
In addition to exam security, the department is also focused on ensuring learner readiness. School violence can significantly disrupt the learning environment and impact students' ability to prepare for and perform well in the exams.
