The 2024 South African matric results are eagerly anticipated by learners across the country. These results signify the culmination of years of dedicated study and mark a crucial turning point in their academic journeys.
The 2024 matric examinations commenced on 21 October and concluded on 28 November. A total of 727,121 full-time and 155,215 part-time candidates participated in these crucial exams, which were administered at 6,900 centers nationwide.
In North West alone, thousands of matrics wrote their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams at 490 centers.
Matric Results Release
Release Date: The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially announced the release date for the 2024 matric results.
- Minister Siviwe Gwarube will announce the national results on 13 January.
- Provincial education departments, including North West, will release results to candidates on the morning of 14 January.
How to Access Your Matric Results
- Online: The DBE website will host a dedicated results portal. You'll need your examination number to access your results.
- School/Exam Center: Your school or the exam center where you wrote your exams will also have your results available. This option provides a physical copy and allows for guidance from your teachers in understanding your results.
Understanding Your Matric Pass
- Bachelor's Pass: This pass requires at least 50% in five designated subjects, including Life Orientation, and above 30% in two other subjects. You can only fail one subject. A Bachelor's Pass allows you to pursue higher education at universities and colleges in fields like medicine, law, and psychology.
- Diploma Pass: This pass requires at least 40% in five designated subjects, including Life Orientation, and at least 30% in two other subjects. You can only fail one subject. A Diploma Pass allows you to attend certain higher learning institutions and technical colleges to study fields such as engineering and nursing.
- Higher Certificate: This pass requires at least 40% in Home Language, 40% in at least two subjects, and 30% in three other subjects. You can only fail one subject. With a Higher Certificate, you can apply to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and some private colleges, provided you meet their admission requirements.
- Fail: If you fail two subjects (scoring 0-29%), you unfortunately fail the year. However, this is not the end of your academic journey. There are options available to rewrite matric and improve your results. You can choose to repeat the entire year or focus on retaking the failed subjects.
2025 May/June Matric Rewrite Applications
Registrations for the 2025 May/June Senior Certificate (SC) and National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations are currently open. Matric candidates can now register for the 2025 midyear matric exam rewrites.
Registration has been open since 1 October 2024, and will close on 7 February 2025.
