The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed the implementation of the fifth phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) / Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). It is expected that more than 200,000 young people will be employed through the programme.

Applications for Phase 5 teaching assistant positions will open on 22 April 2025. The initiative is aimed at youth aged 18 to 34, specifically those who will still be under 35 by the end of March 2026.

There are several requirements for Phase 5 teaching assistant jobs, and this phase introduces a major policy shift from previous rounds.

In earlier phases, individuals who had previously participated in the programme were not eligible to reapply. However, in Phase 5, former participants are now allowed to apply, provided they meet all eligibility criteria.

“Youth who participated in the previous phases (I - IV) may apply, however, they must meet all the eligibility criteria.” — Department of Basic Education
