The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened grant applications for May 2025.
Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grants, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up, and Grant-in-aid.
Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply for a Sassa grant for May 2025.
How to Apply for a Sassa Grant
Step 1: Visit a Sassa Office
Applications must be submitted in person at a Sassa office and completed in the presence of a Sassa official. There is no cost to apply.
If the applicant cannot visit the office, they may nominate a family member or friend to apply on their behalf with a signed authorisation letter.
Step 2: Meet Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the specific requirements for the grant they are applying for and submit all required supporting documents.
Step 3: Obtain Proof of Application
Once the application is submitted, Sassa will issue a reference number or receipt. This serves as proof of application and must be kept safe.
Step 4: Await the Outcome
If approved, the grant will be paid from the date the completed application was submitted—except for the Foster Child Grant, which is paid from the date of the court order.

Sassa offers online applications for the Child Support, Older Persons, and Disability Grants.
If Your Application Is Rejected
Unsuccessful applicants will receive written notification explaining the reason for the rejection. If dissatisfied, they may lodge an appeal.
