The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced its allowance payment schedule for the remainder of the year, specifically for students enrolled in approved programs at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners studying at TVET colleges. These funds cover tuition, registration fees, and allowances for living expenses, accommodation or transportation, and learning materials.
Direct Bank Deposits for TVET Students
Since May 2024, all TVET college students supported by NSFAS have been receiving their allowances directly into their personal bank accounts. Students without existing bank accounts were given the option to select a suitable bank.
This direct payment method will continue to be used for future allowance disbursements to TVET college students.
Benefits of the New TVET Payment System
According to Freeman Nomvalo, the NSFAS administrator, the new payment system has significantly reduced the costs associated with disbursing allowances to students. The previous payment method was both expensive and inefficient, with each transaction costing NSFAS R22 and students R10.
By transitioning to direct payments using its internal banking system, NSFAS has reduced the cost to less than R1 per transaction, while also improving system stability and reducing student complaints.
TVET Students Must Submit Banking Details
NSFAS urges TVET college students to upload their banking details on the myNSFAS portal to ensure timely receipt of allowance payments. Approximately 11,000 students have yet to submit their banking details, which could lead to delays.
Only students with confirmed funding and submitted registration data are eligible to add their banking details on the myNSFAS portal. All submitted bank accounts are subject to NSFAS verification.
How to Upload Bank Details
- Visit the myNSFAS portal.
- Log in using your myNSFAS credentials.
- Select "Bank Account Details" under "Profile Information."
- Enter your bank details.
- Click "Save."
By following these steps, TVET students can ensure they receive their NSFAS allowances on time and avoid any unnecessary delays.
