The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has introduced the Postbank Black Card, giving grant beneficiaries two options for receiving their payments.
Sassa provides over 18 million permanent grants each month, including:
- Older Persons Grant
- Disability Grant
- War Veterans Grant
- Care Dependency Grant
- Foster Child Grant
- Child Support Grant & Top-Up
- Grant-in-Aid
How to Receive Your Sassa Grant
Beneficiaries can choose between the following payment methods:
1. Postbank Black Card
The Postbank Black Card is issued by Sassa’s appointed service provider and allows beneficiaries to withdraw cash and make purchases at ATMs and participating retailers.
2. Personal Bank Account
Beneficiaries can also have their grants deposited directly into their personal bank account. To set this up, they need to visit a Sassa office and provide:
- Proof of bank account (issued by the bank)
- Three months’ bank statements showing their name and account details
- Valid ID or temporary ID
They must also give written or electronic permission for Sassa to process payments. If they’re unable to do so, an alternative arrangement can be made.

Sassa Gold Cards Expiring Soon
Sassa has announced that all Sassa Gold Cards will expire at 5 PM on 20 March 2025. After this date, these cards will no longer work, even if they still contain funds.
To avoid payment disruptions, beneficiaries should replace their gold card with the Postbank Black Card or switch to a personal bank account before the deadline.
