The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has reassured beneficiaries that March 2025 grant payments will proceed smoothly. This comes amid concerns about the upcoming expiration of Sassa Gold Cards.
While your current Sassa Gold Card remains valid for March 2025 payments, beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to transition to the new Postbank Black Card before the extended deadline of 20 March 2025.
Retailers will not accept the cards for any transactions, and any attempts will result in automatic system transaction declines. The gold cards will also not be accepted by any ATM, and they may be swallowed when inserted into any ATM to attempt a transaction.
Sassa Card Replacement Progress
As of 28 February 2025, over 854 248 new Postbank Black Cards have been issued, with a significant increase in the past week.
Gauteng has achieved a 58% card replacement conversion rate, indicating strong progress in a high-volume province.

Required Documents for Sassa Card Collection
When collecting your new Postbank Black Card, please bring the following:
- Valid South African ID: Your original ID or a temporary ID is required.
- Proxy Letter: If collecting on behalf of someone else, bring an official Sassa proxy letter.
- Asylum Seeker Grant Beneficiaries: Bring your official Sassa approval letter.
A valid ID or temporary ID is essential for receiving your Postbank Black Card. If you've lost your ID, please obtain a temporary ID as soon as possible.
