The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) plays a crucial role in supporting millions of vulnerable South Africans through a variety of social grants. These grants are designed to alleviate financial hardship and improve the quality of life for beneficiaries.

Sassa administers a range of grants, including:

  • Older Persons Pension Grant
  • Disability Grant
  • War Veterans Grant
  • Care Dependency Grant
  • Foster Child Grant
  • Child Support Grant
  • Child Support Grant Top-Up
  • Grant-in-Aid
  • Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

Sassa Payment Methods: Old and New

Traditionally, Sassa grants were disbursed through personal bank accounts or Sassa gold cards. These gold cards were specifically designed for Sassa grant payments and could be used at various retail stores and ATMs.

However, Sassa has introduced a new payment method: the Sassa Black Card. This modern card is gradually replacing the older gold cards and is being rolled out nationwide.

There was initial confusion regarding the expiration date of Sassa gold cards. While it was previously announced that they would expire in December 2024, Sassa has clarified that these cards will remain valid until the full transition to the new black cards is complete.

Postbank spokesperson, Bongani Diako said:

The transition will be completed once every Gold Card has been replaced.

"Gold cards will continue to work until we issue them with new Black Cards. So, they must ignore any conflicting information, including any advice that they must change their payment method."

How to Obtain Your New Sassa Black Card

To obtain your new Sassa Black Card, follow these steps:

  1. Locate a Card Replacement Centre: Dial *120*355# and select option 1 to find a center in your province.
  2. Prepare Necessary Documents: Bring your valid ID document. If you're collecting a card on behalf of someone else, you'll need an official Sassa proxy letter. Asylum seekers should bring their official approval letter from Sassa.

Sassa has assured beneficiaries that their gold cards will continue working until all gold cards have been replaced.
