At the beginning of August, The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) reopened applications for the special Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant. SASSA has now made some changes to make things easier for beneficiaries. SRD grant beneficiaries can now change their banking details on any day of the month.
In the past, grant beneficiaries could only change their bank details during certain weeks. SASSA encourages applicants to provide their banking details, as this enables SASSA to process grants quickly. This will allow beneficiaries to access their money at an ATM.
The South African Post Office said that this would also help limit the spread of Covid-19 as fewer people will be at queuing at the post office. Follow the steps below to change your banking details
Step 1: Visit the SASSA website https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
Step 2: Find the ‘How do I change my banking details' heading
Step 3: Insert your ID number
Step 4: An SMS containing a secure link will be sent to the mobile phone number with which you registered during the application.
Step 5: Click on the link in the SMS
Step 6: Select the bank account details option. Insert your banking details (It must be your personal bank account)
The Post Office is currently responsible for the distribution of the R350 SRD grant.
The Post Office has said it will not pay the R350 grant during Public Holidays, weekends and when normal monthly social grants payments take place.
These other grants include old age grants, disability grants or childrens’ grants. If you have chosen to collect your money at the Post Office, you are asked to wait for an SMS informing you that your money is available for collection.
