Before submitting your online application for a permanent social grant, you will have to register for an online profile on the Sassa service portal, and this can be done using the following steps.

How To Register For An Online Sassa Account

To apply for social grants and access the Sassa service portal, you must first register for an online Sassa account. Follow these steps to complete the registration process for a Sassa online application:

  1. Visit the Sassa Services Portal.
  2. Click on 'Register' under 'Register New Account.'
  3. When the prompt for South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) & Cookie Consent appears, click 'I Agree.'
  4. Click 'Apply.'
  5. Fill out the user registration form, providing your personal details such as name, surname, ID number, email address, and phone number.
  6. Create a password that you will use when logging into your SASSA account to view your SRD grant details.

How To Do Your Online Sassa Login

Once you have registered for an online Sassa account, you can proceed to login to it by following these steps:

  1. Enter your user name, which is your ID number, and the password you provided during registration.
  2. The Sassa service website may request access to your browser.
  3. Click 'Allow' to proceed.

Once have logged into the Sassa service portal after completing your online account registration you can now submit your online application for a permanent grant. You will also confirm your banking details here.

How To Submit Your Sassa Grant Application Online

To submit your Sassa grant application online, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Sassa services website.
  2. Log in using your user name and password.
  3. Click on 'Apply for a Grant' and specify the grant you want to apply for.
  4. Complete the grant application form by providing the required information.
  5. Print out the affidavit generated by Sassa and have it commissioned by the nearest commissioner of oath. Also, print, sign, and submit the bank payment form along with the affidavit.
  6. You will use your South African ID number for your Sassa services account.
  7. Upload certified supporting documents in PDF format as indicated by the application form.
  8. Submit your application. You will receive a confirmation of submission with a reference number via email or SMS. Keep this reference number for future inquiries.

The South African Social Security Agency also administers the Social Relief of Distress grant for the Social Development Department. The SRD grant follows a slightly different application process. This grant was introduced to financially assist South Africans who were negatively affected by Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

This includes those who are not financially assisted in any way by the government and have no alternative income. The R350 grant is currently due to end on March 2024 according to Sassa.

How To Apply For The R350 Grant 

Its important to ensure that you meet all specified eligibility requirements to qualify the R350 grant prior to applying. Once that is out of the way, you can then apply for the R350 grant using the steps listed below:

  1. Visit the SRD grant website.
  2. Click on 'click here to apply online.'
  3. Enter your mobile phone number and click 'send SMS.' You will receive a message to your cellphone number
  4. An OTP (One Time Pin) will be sent to the provided number. Enter the OTP.
  5. Confirm and accept the Clauses in the Declaration and Consent documents.
  6. Enter your personal details, employment information, and lifestyle sustainability information.
  7. Provide your banking details.
  8. Follow the prompts to complete your application.

Alternatively, you can also apply for the Sassa R350 grant through WhatsApp using the following steps:

  1. Add Sassa on WhatsApp using the number 082 046 8553.
  2. Send a message to the number, stating "SRD Grant" for self-application or on behalf of someone else.
  3. Provide your name and surname as they appear on your identification document.
  4. Read and accept the terms and conditions by responding with 'YES.'
  5. Indicate your citizenship status (South African citizen, Permanent Resident, or Refugee).
  6. Click on the link sent to you in the WhatsApp chat.
  7. Confirm and accept the Clauses in the Declaration and Consent documents.
  8. Enter your ID number.
  9. Follow the prompts to complete your R350 grant application.

In the event that your application is rejected and you believe it to be unjustified, you have the option to submit an application appeal, also known as an application for reconsideration. SASSA recommends doing this promptly upon receiving feedback on your application to avoid potential delays.
