A Limpopo university has decided on the payment of allowances for off-campus accommodation. This comes after the institution was rocked by student protests concerning the payment of allowances. 


Many people living in South Africa have academic goals, which can be achieved by attending a public university. Some of the country's 26 universities are still considering student applications for the 2023 academic year.

 


Over the next few weeks, more than a million determined grade 12’s across South Africa will be hurrying to complete their application for a place at most higher education institutions before the end of September deadline.


It is estimated that more than 65% of South African youth are not in employment, education or training. The country’s deputy president believes that drastic action is needed in the education sector to reduce the grim figures of youth unemployment.

Rohwan Naidoo thought that by the time he was 25, he would be a qualified Chartered Accountant and well on the way to being established in the world. Instead, he found himself struggling to pass The South African Institute of Chartered Accounting (SAICA) Initial Test of Competence (ITC).


Two new universities will soon be built in South Africa. This will bolster the number of qualified professionals in the country and add to the 26 public universities already serving the country.

 


Four of South Africa’s public universities are featured in the top  450 universities in a globally ranked list. The ranking of the universities was based on visibility, transparency and excellence.

 


Universities are the preferred option for individuals wanting to pursue tertiary education qualifications. However, the government may downgrade universities if they do not meet their performance mandates in the coming years.

 


The high rate of young people who are unemployed, not enrolled in education or training programmes is a concern for South Africa's higher education department. The department believes that skills development is key to solving this crisis.

 


The Higher Education Department is committed to playing its role to reducing unemployment in South Africa and has announced it will provide millions in funding for community colleges to upskill adults in the country. 

 

 


South Africa has 26 public universities throughout its nine provinces, however, only specified institutions offer certain unique and specialised courses. Students wanting to study at these universities require accommodation, which is not always possible.

 


The Higher Education Department has aligned its goals to that of South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) which aims to reduce poverty, iniquity and unemployment by 2030. Here's how the department will look to contribute to these goals through its plans to support Community Education & Training (CET) colleges.
