Does fighting fires and helping your local community sound appealing to you? If so, then you may want to consider pursuing a career in firefighting. Here's what you need to know if you're considering taking that leap.

Who can become a firefighter?

Firefighting is not for everyone. The daily risks firefighters face and the trauma associated with the job cannot be over-stressed. Most firefighters agree that the material or financial benefits of the job very often do not compare to the sacrifice.

Therefore it is imperative that those who enter the firefighting field are passionate about helping people and committed to saving lives.

Firemen need to be good problem-solvers who are able to function under severe stress. They should be trustworthy, disciplined and reliable, as well as in good physical shape.

What do I need?

In order to be trained as a fireman you will need to have your matric certificate and a driving licence code 10 with PrDP. You can not be claustrophobic or afraid of heights. Physical fitness is another important requirement as the job is extremely strenuous, and you'll have to pass a series of physical tests in order to become a firefighter.

Where do I start?

The firefighting staffing structure works through ranks. In order to become a basic firefighter you will typically need to complete four months of training. This is the first level or rank. After completing the next level of training you will get promoted to Platoon Commander. From there the ranks progress from Station commander to Divisional Chief to Deputy Chief and finally, Fire Chief. Ranks or titles may vary within each fire department. Often fire-fighters need to work for a specified time period before they qualify to move on to the next rank.
