Initially, the Gauteng 2024 online admissions application period was scheduled to close on 14 July 2023, but the Provincial Education Department noticed that some parents were submitting their children’s documents at schools.
As such, this extension will give applicants an opportunity to submit documents after the school recess, which is due to commence from 23 June 2023 until 28 July 2023.
In a statement, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced:
We wish to announce an extension on the closing date of the 2024 Online Admissions application period for Grade 1 and Grade 8 to 21 July 2023.
The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona has mentioned that despite this extension, parents and guardians are still encouraged to apply by visiting www.gdeadmissions.gov.za and registering to proceed with the application process.
Recently, Mabona has also shared that the Education Department has successfully processed over 400 000 applications since the start of the application period on 15 June 2023.
As Gauteng Education has processed a total of 408 714 applications using its admissions system. The department has revealed that it has received a total of 176 975 Grade 1 applications and 231 739 Grade 8 applications.
“This is a testament to our system’s improvement and the demand for the quality education which Gauteng offers,” said Gauteng MEC for Education and Youth Development, Matome Chiloane.

Parents and guardians have been advised not to use internet cafés when applying online for placement in Gauteng, as they are unreliable.
The department has assured applicants that the 2024 online admission process will be seamless and learners will be admitted without problems.
