A survey commissioned by the Department of Social Development found that 90% of Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant recipients used their money to purchase food.
They demonstrate the importance of the grant. The state recognised this and subsequently extended the grant by 12 months in February 2022. The grant is now scheduled to come to an end in March 2023.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) revealed that of the 10 million beneficiaries of the grant, more than 4 million people were deemed ineligible to receive the stats support.
Applicants can appeal this rejection status and possibly overturn the decision from Sassa and be approved for payment.
However, earlier this year, Sassa informed clients that there is delay in the reconsideration process.
Sassa has now assured clients the reconsideration process is underway.
