According to LaCivita at the heart of the problem is that “people think they get hired because of their qualifications.” But this is untrue.
The reality is that your qualifications can only secure an interview. In order to get hired you have to be "...effective at sharing how your qualifications match what the employer needs.”
In other words neither your long term experience, vibrant personality or achievements will seal the deal. LaCivita says that your ability to communicate your skill set is the key to succeeding in any job interview.
This is because an employer is looking for a candidate that will meet their needs.
"Most people make the mistake thinking, im very qualified for this role, i'm perfect, I like the company...they should like me.” But poor communication could ruin your chances.
Maybe you are a perfect match for the job, but how do you translate your fit and value to the employer?
First of all be aware that once you have reached the interview stage its about the communication not the qualifications.
Secondly, don't rush to answer interview questions until you know exactly what the interviewer is looking for to determine if you are a good fit for the company.
'Tell me about yourself' is a popular example of an ambiguous question asked during interviews that can trip up even the most suitable candidates.
Make sure you know specifically what part of your background is important for the employer or job interviewer to know.
You can do this by asking the interviewer what area of your work experience they are interested in. This is a good principle to apply when answering any interview question.
An interview is not an opportunity to boast about your achievements but rather an opportunity to give employers the information that will help them realize you have what they want.
