While the standard skills of a good hire usually soft skills, today more businesses are looking for candidates who are able to solve complex problems enthusiastically and quickly.

The ideal customer service candidate needs to be someone who can help your business thrive. If their attitude is on par with the employer's expectations, the rest can be learned through customer service training.

So, if a company is looking to hire someone who can take their business to the next level, they will consider the following:

Must possess strong problem-solving skills

Businesses are always going to deal with difficult clients who provide them with difficult situations. But what matters most is how you treat them when overcoming those situations. The most successful customer service agents are always the ones who are able to provide customers with a painless experience by trying new techniques, showing customers that they care and by taking initiative in tricky situations.

The customer is always right and by trying to engage with them and offer a seamless experience, agents will be able to deliver exceptional service which will help to generate a good company name and industry reputation.

Must show dedication to clients from start to end

The perception people have of a brand is based on how they’ve been treated during their experience. Most agents who are lazy treat customers poorly and do not follow through with their service. Customer service needs to turn into customer support and customer success thereafter.

Agents must treat customers well from start to finish and do whatever it takes to provide them with what they need before they leave.

Must have the ability to keep calm and collected

Regardless of how frustrated or angry agents are, they need to learn how to keep calm. They cannot show frustration to customers or take a personal attack on a customer. This will only make the situation worse.

So, employers will then look for someone who can stay calm and focused when provoked. This will show them the type of attitude someone has when dealing with customers on behalf of the business.

Must have strong communication skills

When looking for the ideal candidate, businesses need to look at their telephonic skills, in-person communication skills and their problem-solving skills to see how these skills combined can make life easier for the customer.

Agents need to use the right language when communicating with a customer, as well as have the ability to pick up on cues and respond to them in the right manner. They must match their tone with the customer’s as this will help them to feel more comfortable and at ease.

Must have a positive mindset and willingness to learn

A customer service agent needs to be positive. They’re employed to help the company keep their customers happy, therefore they need to have a cheerful personality. They also need to be willing to learn the latest technology software and tools that can be used to make their job easier and more efficient.

For example, business should make sure whoever they hire knows how to navigate a customer relationship management (CRM) system with ease. Any additional skills can be taught through services SETA accredited training providers, but they must be able to see that their employees want to learn and better themselves on behalf of the  business.

Must be an honest individual

As with any role, it’s absolutely vital to be honest in a client-facing department. Customers rely on agents and their skills to help them, therefore agents need to be honest with them and up-front with any concerns, product information and more. Customers will always appreciate honesty.

For example, if a particular product is going to take two weeks to be delivered, agents must tell them. They shouldn't beat around the bush and “try” to go out of their way to have a product delivered in a shorter period of time. This will only cause more frustration.

Must be confident in solving conflict

Most employees in regular jobs steer away from conflict because they simply don’t like confrontation. While it’s an important skill to have, it’s vital in customer servicing roles. The reason for this is that agents are often going to enter into conflict with an unhappy customer, and for that, they need to know how to solve the issue in real-time.

Businesses need to employ individuals who they can rely on to do a good job on behalf of the brand and guarantee return customers because of their excellent service.

Being a customer service agent is not easy. It goes beyond being a people’s person and it requires them to be resilient and change according to the customer’s needs. With plenty of practice, customer service agents will be able to wow customers and reap the rewards of being a successful customer service agent.

If they have the right mindset, they will be able to progress through a professional training programme.
