People sometimes feel like it's time for a change in their life. Oftentimes people act on these feelings and make changes in their life.
This may lead to people choosing to resign from their places of employment.
The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides short term financial relief to workers who are unable to work for a number of different reasons or if they have been retrenched. People who have chosen to leave their place of employment may not necessarily qualify for UIF benefits.
The rule around claiming UIF benefits states that you cannot claim if you have resigned, been suspended or absconded from work.
However, you may claim if the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) considers the resignation as a constructive dismissal. This means you will need to approach the CCMA for consideration.
In order to claim UIF benefits, you will need to meet the qualifying conditions for the specific benefit you are applying for. Your benefits are dependent on the amount of credits you have acquired during the period of your employment. The maximum amount of credits you can aquire is 365 credits
The UIF offers benefits for the following circumstances
