The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the 2024 National Senior Certificate results will be released on Monday, 13 January 2025. However, a legal dispute over publishing the results in newspapers remains unresolved.

Learners to Access Results the Next Day

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga announced that Grade 12 learners would receive their results on Tuesday, 14 January 2025. Matric results will be available at exam centres, on the DBE website, or via SMS.

“We are now at the point where we are finalising the results for the class of 2024,” Mhlanga stated.

Those who sat for the National Senior Certificate can rest assured that the department will keep its promise of delivering your results.

Matric Results Ready Thanks to Markers

Mhlanga commended the efforts of the 55,000 markers who worked at 188 marking centres nationwide. Their dedication, he said, ensured the timely release of results.

We’re happy and we thank them for the job well done,” he said. “We encourage them to continue the good work in 2025 as they have set a high standard in ensuring a smooth process.

Court Battle Over Newspaper Publication

Despite a court battle challenging the publication of results in newspapers, Mhlanga remains optimistic that matric results will appear in print.

The legal dispute stems from concerns that publishing results might violate the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI Act). Afriforum previously challenged the DBE in court, securing a 2022 ruling that allows results to be published using exam numbers.

We will do so because there is a court order from 2022 instructing us to publish the results,” Mhlanga explained. “That ruling followed Afriforum’s successful legal challenge, which mandated the department to continue publishing results in newspapers.

Now the North Gauteng High Court has thrown out the Information Regulator's case and ruled that the results can be published in newspapers with exam numbers. Judge Ronel Tolmay declared that the case was not urgent as matric results are released each year at this time.

Matric candidates will then be able to find out if they have passed by reviewing the newspaper and checking under their exam numbers.  To receive full results, including subject marks, students will need to visit the school/exam centre or search for your results online.
