The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) gives short-term relief to workers when they become unemployed or are unable to work because of maternity, adoption and parental leave, illness or after a work contract has ended.
The Department of Employment and Labour recently ran a UIF campaign of paying previous participants of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI).
When the contracts of former Teaching and General Assistants ended, they then qualified to collect UIF benefits.

Recently, the UIF campaign moved to the Umgungundlovu District after disbursing R25.1 million in one of the 11 district municipalities of the KwaZulu-Natal province. In a statement, the Labour Department has explained:
The campaign was run in the Zululand District two weeks ago, where it processed and paid out R25.1 million to 5 886 beneficiaries from 9 January 2023 - 20 January 2023.
Ever since this campaign kicked-off in November 2022, a cumulative of R76.2 million has been paid out to 17 095 beneficiaries so far.
The Fund has confirmed that it will proceed to pay out valid UIF claims of former Teaching and General Assistants who were employed at the uMgungundlovu District from 23 January 2023 until 27 January 2023. The venue that has been chosen by the Fund for its activities is Linpark High School in Pietermaritzburg.
Clients who wish to lodge their UIF benefit claims have been urged to bring along their Identity Document/Passport, a fully charged smartphone with data, a black pen and proof of valid banking details.
Since the former Teaching and General Assistants are currently without employment, the department’s Public Employment Services branch will be registering the unemployed clients CV’s on the Employment Services of South Africa system for possible jobs.
The UIF campaign will be increasing its capacity in the KwaZulu-Natal province and it will dispatch two separate teams to assist clients swiftly.
The Fund will announce its upcoming dates and venues in due course on its social media platforms and through the media, as it continues to make payments to the former teacher assistants.
