Mathematics is viewed as one of the more challenging subjects at schools, and with the release of the 2021 Grade 12 Examination Results, how well did the class of 2021 fair?

Of the 259 143 learners who wrote mathematics, just above 57% passed.

Dr Batseba Mofolo-Mbokane, a lecturer in mathematics education at Wits University says the results are not too bad. However, when you compare it to the other gateway subjects the pass rate is considerably lower.

She says we need to gain an understanding why the pass rate of mathematics differs from province to province and why there is a higher pass rate in maths but the percentage of dispersions is lower than that of previous years.

Mofolo-Mbokane believes that the improvement of mathematics needs to be an effort from when learners are in the foundation phase.

She said, “Mathematics is a very specialised subject”.

Mofolo-Mbokane adds that the Association For Mathematics Education Of South Africa (AMESA) has a number of Whatsapp groups in which teachers from different phases can exchange ideas and resources aimed at improving mathematics in South Africa.

She believes that a collaborative effort between the education department, AMESA and universities will improve the mathematics results in South Africa.
