The Grade 12 class of 2021 are just a few weeks away from receiving their final results. Here is what the different matric passes mean.  

The pass requirements for matriculants remain the same, however, the results they receive often determines or guides their next steps. 

In this article we will look at what are the pass requirements for a Bachelor's Degree level pass, Diploma level pass and the Higher Certificate level pass. 

Higher Certificate Pass

A higher certificate level pass allows candidates to attend courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. You will need to meet the minimum requirements for the course you are applying for. 

Candidates will receive a higher certificate level pass by …

  • Obtaining 40% in your Home Language
  • Obtaining at least 40% in two other subjects.
  • Obtain at least 30% for three other subjects
  • You are allowed to fail one subject 

Diploma Pass 

A diploma pass will allow candidates to attend an institution of higher learning in order to study towards a diploma level course. 

Candidates will receive a Diploma level pass by …

  • Obtaining 40% in four subjects 
  • Obtaining 40% in your home language 
  • 30% in language of learning and teaching
  • You are allowed to fail one subject 

Bachelor’s Pass

A Bachelor's level pass will allow candidates to go to university and study toward a degree level course. 

Candidates will receive a Bachelor's level pass by …

  • Obtaining 50% in four subjects 
  • Obtaining 40% in your home language
  • 30% in language of learning and teaching

Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the department is on schedule to release the results on 20 January 2022.
