In the unfortunate event of a suspension, some employees are left without work and sometimes without a salary. This could lead to a situation where an individual cannot meet their basic needs.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides short term financial relief to its contributors in South Africa. They offer a wide array of benefits including those who lost income after needing to take illness leave, maternity leave, adoption leave, parental leave and employees whose work hours have been reduced.

But what if you were suspended? Does the UIF pay benefits if an employee was suspended?

No, as an employee, you cannot claim UIF benefits if you have been suspended, chosen to resign or if the you were absconded from work.

Employees can however approach the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) if they feel their suspension was unfair.

The CCMA conciliates over workplace disputes and serves as an arbitrator when certain categories in disputes remain unresolved after conciliation.

The UIF offers benefits for the following circumstances

Applications for UIF benefits can be made at your nearest Department of Labour centre or on the UFiling website at https://ufiling.co.za/uif/
