The 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations have officially concluded, marking the end of a significant chapter for thousands of South African Grade 12 learners. A total of 882,336 candidates, including both full-time and part-time students, participated in the exams that concluded on 28 November 2024.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has commenced the crucial task of marking the 2024 matric exams. Over 55,000 qualified markers have been deployed across 188 marking centers nationwide, with Director-General Hubert Matanzima Mweli overseeing the process.
Mweli said:
The markers are up and ready to mark the scripts for the 2024 NSC examinations. We are truly grateful to all markers who have taken on this task. Markers are determined to give of their best during this time. The sacrifice made by these markers does not go unnoticed!
External moderators from Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, will monitor the marking process to guarantee the quality and accuracy of the assessments.
These markers have been selected based on strict criteria to ensure that only experienced and qualified educators participate in the marking process.
To ensure consistency and fairness in the marking process, the DBE is conducting Marking Standardisation Meetings (MSMs) for each subject. These meetings aim to align the marking criteria and expectations of markers.
"These meetings will bring together subject specialists and chief markers to ensure that all marking is aligned with agreed-upon standards."
Matric Results Release
The DBE has confirmed that the final matric results will be announced by the Minister on 13 January 2025. Provincial education departments will then distribute the results to candidates on the morning of 14 January 2025.
This earlier release date is to accommodate the start of the 2025 school year, which begins on 15 January 2025.
