There still is no final decision on whether Matric Results will be published in newspapers in January.

The tussle between the Information Regulator and the Department of Basic Education over the publication of Matric results in January next year is escalating.

Matric final results have been published in newspapers for many years, but the Information Regulator is not confident that the Department of Basic Education is protecting the privacy of learners with this practice.

But the Department didn't want to comply with the Regulator's decision and announced that they still wanted to release the exam results in newspapers.

The Minister will announce the national pass rate, and congratulate some of the top learners, on the evening of Monday 13th January 2025. The individual results for learners are usually available from midnight of that night in newspapers, as well as from schools and via SMS/USSD.

The job of the Information Regulator is to ensure that private companies, and government bodies, take sufficient care of personal information and don't allow personal information to be publicly available. The ever-increasing crime of identity theft is just one of the problems they are trying to curtail.

First the Information Regulator issued a ruling that the Department of Basic Education must not publish the Matric results in newspapers. The Department appealed the decision and wanted it to be heard in court.  The Regulator then issued a fan of R5 million to the Department for not following their ruling.

In the latest move, the Regulator is turning to the courts to rule that the results must not be published in newspapers.  The SABC reports that the case is expected to be heard on the 7th of January, only a week before the results should be published.

If matriculants can't find their results in newspapers there are a number of other ways to get their results.
