The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is tasked with providing support to citizens and permanent residents in the country.

Social Relief of Distress (SRD) is an emergency type of relief that provides relief to citizens facing several circumstances. This includes providing relief if an applicant has been affected by a disaster as defined in the Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, 1978.

The Covid-19 pandemic is a recent example of a circumstance that would lead to Sassa providing SRD. During the pandemic, SRD was distributed in the form of the R350 grant.

The recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal presented a situation in which citizens needed SRD from the government.

Who Can Apply For SRD IN KZN?

The temporary provision of assistance is meant for families who are unable to meet the most basic needs of families who are affected by a crisis or disaster.

Which SRD Is Provided By Sassa During A Crisis Or Disaster?

  • Food vouchers to the value of R1 200 per family
  • R1 960 x2 (3 920 per family) as food vouchers or cash to a family member who died due to the disaster/crisis.
  • School uniform is provided to learners for lost uniform during the due to the disaster, R2 700 for girls and R2 500 for boys

How To Apply To Apply For The Food Voucher 

Submit your contact details to a ward councillor at your nearest municipality or to a social worker. Your application for the food voucher is processed immediately after the assessment. Once your application is approved, the voucher will be issued.
