Who Qualifies For Sassa Grant Top-Up?

The cost of living in South Africa has shot up in the last few months with increases to the price of fuel and electricity, both being major factors in the input costs of businesses. A consequence of this has been an increase in the cost of food and transport, affecting Sassa grant beneficiaries.

The Household Affordability Index showed that the food basket increased by R472.78 (11.4%) from R4 137.11 in May 2021 to R4 609.89 in May 2022. This demonstrates the rising cost of living in South Africa.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) announced that caregivers of orphans will qualify for an increased amount to the grants they receive. This will  better equip them to navigate the rising cost of living in the country. 

Sassa Child Support Grant (CSG) Top Up is aimed at assisting relatives caring for orphans to provide for their basic needs. Its main purpose is to keep children in the care of their extended family. 

These children will receive the basic CSG of R480, plus an additional amount of R240, bringing the total to R720. 

Eligible caregivers can now apply for the CSG Top Up at any of SASSA's local offices and online

Here’s What's Needed To Apply For The Child Support Grant Top Up

- Certified copies of the death certificates of the child’s parent/s; or

- Where the death certificate of one of the parents of the child cannot be obtained by the applicant, a certified copy of the death certificate of one parent and an affidavit by the applicant attesting to the unknown status of the child’s other parent.
