Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that more than 46% of South Africa’s population are beneficiaries of a social grant.
Due to the high percentage of grant beneficiaries in the country, many people will have questions about the various social grants offered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
However, many clients have complained that it is extremely challenging to get information from SASSA via their Toll-Free number. Some have said the number is not working or is always engaged.
Sassa says that they are experiencing a high volume of calls due to the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant.
The SRD grant was introduced in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 10 million people have been approved to benefit from the grant.
The agency said, “Please note that SASSA has a high call volume due to the special COVID-19 SRD social grant. Not all calls will be attended to immediately. Please be patient when calling. Alternatively, you may DM us for any social grant related query”.
