Minister of Basic Education Announces Improved Matric Result Pass Rate For 2024

It was the first Matric results announcement for Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and she was able to announce an improved pass rate achieved by the 2024 Matric candidates. In fact it is the best pass rate the country has ever achieved.

A nationally televised gala event was opened in Johannesburg for the Basic Education Minister to announce the results of the 2024 Matric final exams.

460,000 educators work in the country's 25,000 schools and the Minister thanked and recognised these teachers for their hard work and contribution to educating the nation.

The Minister welcomed the achievements in the sector, particular the statistic that show 98% of all children between the ages of 7 and 15 enrolled in schools. She said the focus must now turn to the quality of the education the country's young people achieve.

97% of learners who enrolled for their Matric year went on to write the end of year exams. The Minister congratulated the teachers at schools for covering all the subject material - and congratulated the learners for their hard work.

The Minister said 47.8% of candidates passed with access to Bachelors studies - which was up from 40% the year before. This equated to 337,000 bachelor passes. The highest number was achieved by KwaZul-Natal with 84,000, followed by Gauteng with 66,000, and then the Eastern Cape with 45,000 Bachelors passes. Females performed better than their male counterparts in the

319,000 distinctions were achieved by the candidates of 2024 and a total of 615,000 learners passed.

The Minister then went on to announce the national number that everyone was waiting for.

The national pass rate increased 82,9% to 87.3%. This is the highest Matric pass rate that the country has ever achieved. 

.The Free State was the top performing province achieving a 91% Matric pass rate.

1. Free State - 91%
2. KwaZulu-Natal - 89.5%
3. Gauteng - 88.4 %
4. North West - 87.5%
5. Western Cape - 86.6%
6. Limpopo - 85.01%
7. Mpumalanga - 84.99%
8. Eastern Cape - 84.98%
9. Northern Cape - 84.2%

The individual results for each candidate will be available online from 6am tomorrow morning (14th January).
