All social grants in the country are administered through the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
Sassa administers several grant payments such as the old age grant, disability grant, child support grant, foster child grant, care dependency grant as well as the special R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant
The agency has availed numerous payment methods for beneficiaries to collect and receive their monies each month, this includes the use of a personal bank account.
If you have a Sassa gold card and want to receive your monthly social grant payments directly into your bank account, there are a few steps you need to take to make the switch.
In a recent tweet the agency explained that beneficiaries who wish to switch over to using their personal bank accounts instead of the Sassa gold card, need to visit their nearest Sassa offices and bring along certain documents.
Grant recipients must bring along the following documents:
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of bank account received from the bank and/or
- Three months bank statement that depicts the personal details of the client such as names and bank accounts
This applies to beneficiaries for all Sassa grants excluding Covid-19 SRD recipients as payment method changes for that particular grant are strictly done on the SRD website.
The change in payment method is aimed at providing greater flexibility and convenience to beneficiaries, reducing the need to visit physical payment points.
The agency has advised all beneficiaries to provide accurate and up-to-date information when making changes to their payment methods.

It is important to note that If you select for the payment to go into a bank account, you have to make sure that you submit your own personal bank account details, as Sassa will not be able to pay your grant into another person’s bank account.
Sassa has affirmed that failure to provide the necessary documents may result in delays in the processing of payments.
